Great news for people living in the US. It has been officially announced that the will be available on June 6th and will cost $199.99 after $100 mail-rebate and 2-year contract.

The phone will go on sale nationwide (US) at Sprint stores, Best Buy, Radio Shack, and select Wal-Mart stores. The will be available under Sprint’s Everything Data or Business Essentials with Messaging and Data plans.

Accessories include the optional $69.99 charging dock kit that includes the $49.99 dock and $19.99 back cover.

Quite a clever move by Palm as just 2 days later is the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference!

Now the question is when will us Brits get the ? I’m guessing it could be several more months as the US version is EVDO only so they need to release a separate GSM version!

New WebOS screenshots emerge

by James on April 30, 2009

Most of the news recently has been a bit boring and mainly consisting of rumours. Finally we are seeing some newsworthy information.

This time we have some nice new screenshots of . This batch of screens leaked by a PalmPre developer didn’t actually orginate on a real – they were screen grabbed from the that developers use to test their code.

The pictures show off what the looks like during a call, a one-touch panel for controlling wifi, toggling Airplane Mode, a setup page for Facebook, Google Mail and Microsoft Exchange (Synergy integration).the native Google Maps app and also some general setting pages.

A lot of people were hoping that Palm would announce the launch data and pricing of the in yesterdays keynote. Unfortunately  this was not the case, they did however announce that the Palm would receive an emulator and they also announced they are not taking applications for an "early look" .

The SDK will be made available to developers that the company will be cherry-picking from today and this should help get the number of 3rd party applications up for the launch of the

Palm OS emulation for the Pre and webOS?

by James on April 2, 2009

Good news for all you Palm OS fans, Palm have announced that third-party developer MotionApps will be making a Palm OS available for purchase to coincide with the launch of the .

The application will be utilize the mass storage mode of the device to allow for drag-and-drop of PRCs, though according to the press release, the "won’t be able to leverage core functionality," meaning that not all application will work 100%.  This will most likely effect applications that require deeper access into the phone.

Another Palm Pre Release Rumour

by James on March 31, 2009

One of our readers left a comment saying that he was informed by a Vodafone sales representative that the maybe available with them next month!

As always there is very little evidence that this is even close to the truth as I suspect most Vodafone staff will know about as much as the rest of us but you never know!

Rumour: Palm Pre coming to O2?

by James on March 12, 2009

According to Palm Info Center Numerous Spanish media outlets are reporting today that Telefónica’s Movistar will exclusively offer the in Spain, UK and Latin America. The Spanish newspaper Expansion reports (Translated) that Telefónica will offer the in Spain "before summer."

More interestingly the paper also reports that Telefónica’s subsidiary brand , will exclusively market the in the UK, beating out its rival Vodafone.

This would seem like a bit of a drastic move on O2s behalf as they will have invested a large amount of money to secure the Palm contract only to have it compete with its golden boy the iPhone. However I guess if they feel the is good enough that people will ditch then I guess it would be worth it.

I’m still betting that it will be Vodafone that wins the contract.

O’Reilly has released a  56min long on developing applications for .

The following quick list of questions and answers has also been produced:

  • They would not comment on the for the SDK or the .
  • They expect to see a fair amount of games on the platform. Right now, web-based games will be most suitable; other games (that need deeper access to the hardware) will come later.
  • When asked if "connected" apps will run when no connection is available, they should. Apps are designed with storage functions so even web apps will have storage functions and be able to cache and load data, rather than just displaying a blank page.
  • Headless apps are not limited other than the fact that they have no associated card. They operate in the dashboard panel, and technically can be as functional as a card app.
  • The app catalog was mostly under wraps, but will be the primary way to get apps at launch.
  • The ability to build apps will not be operating-system specific. The tools in the will be supported on Mac, Linux and Windows.
  • Performance is of primary concern, and once the device has been released, performance should be just as good as the -release demos from CES and the .
  • They are not commenting on how fullscreen will be implemented in 3rd party apps (currently the pic viewer and player will support this feature), but they stated it was important, and will be looked into. They noted that window sizing will be handled at the system level.

Palm Pre Official Specs

by James on February 12, 2009

Ok well we know most of the ’s specification anyway but print just updated their site with the Palm Pre’s specs and it does include some nice bits of information.

The 2 main features to note is the inclusion of MMS and the ability to use the phone as a modem via Bluetooth or USB tethering.

USB tethering is quite important as it pisses me right off when I am travelling and want to connect to the net via my phone and I am unable to do so!

PreCentral also pointed out the following about the storage:

7.4GB will actually be available from the 8GB included, possibly implying the size of the OS is somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 megs or so (though it’s still unclear what the relationship between the 8GB of storage and RAM will be, and whether or not the will use Program Memory RAM/Storage ROM/Mass Storage like Windows Mobile or have a simpler RAM/Storage setup like other phones).

More Palm Pre Launch Rumours

by James on February 3, 2009

To be honest we have nearly no idea when the will be launched, officially it is set to be released in the first half of 2009. However that has not stopped everyone coming up with theories on exactly when it will be released.

The main is February 15th though it seems unlikely however there have been several sources backing up this date, so you never know!

Palmpreschool.com believes we will see the on the shelves March 1st. The reasoning behind this is a little in the world of conspiracy theories.

Basically they state:

Viewing the time on the in each of Palm’s screen shots will clue you in.  Every image shows a time of 3:01.  I have to admit a very discreet level of communication.  But not official just incase things get held up.

Personally I doubt that will be the case but if they are correct then this will be great as we have less than a month away until . I do however have a strong suspicion that us Brits will not have the same as the yanks as they Palm is based on 3G EVDO Rev A which is the network used in the USA. A GSM one will be released but you know there will be a gap in release dates!
