Most of the Palm Pre news recently has been a bit boring and mainly consisting of release date rumours. Finally we are seeing some newsworthy information.
This time we have some nice new screenshots of WebOS. This batch of screens leaked by a PalmPre developer didn’t actually orginate on a real Pre – they were screen grabbed from the emulator that developers use to test their code.
The pictures show off what the Palm Pre looks like during a call, a one-touch panel for controlling wifi, toggling Airplane Mode, a setup page for Facebook, Google Mail and Microsoft Exchange (Synergy integration).the native Palm Pre Google Maps app and also some general setting pages.

A lot of people were hoping that Palm would announce the launch data and pricing of the Palm Pre in yesterdays keynote. Unfortunately this was not the case, they did however announce that the Palm would receive an emulator and they also announced they are not taking applications for an "early look" Mojo SDK.
The SDK will be made available to developers that the company will be cherry-picking from today and this should help get the number of 3rd party applications up for the launch of the Palm Pre

Good news for all you Palm OS fans, Palm have announced that third-party developer MotionApps will be making a Palm OS emulator available for purchase to coincide with the launch of the Pre.
The application will be utilize the mass storage mode of the device to allow for drag-and-drop of PRCs, though according to the press release, the emulator "won’t be able to leverage core webOS functionality," meaning that not all application will work 100%. This will most likely effect applications that require deeper access into the phone.

One of our readers left a comment saying that he was informed by a Vodafone sales representative that the Palm Pre maybe available with them next month!
As always there is very little evidence that this is even close to the truth as I suspect most Vodafone staff will know about as much as the rest of us but you never know!

According to Palm Info Center Numerous Spanish media outlets are reporting today that Telefónica’s Movistar will exclusively offer the Palm Pre in Spain, UK and Latin America. The Spanish newspaper Expansion reports (Translated) that Telefónica will offer the Pre in Spain "before summer."
More interestingly the paper also reports that Telefónica’s subsidiary brand O2, will exclusively market the Pre in the UK, beating out its rival Vodafone.
This would seem like a bit of a drastic move on O2s behalf as they will have invested a large amount of money to secure the Palm contract only to have it compete with its golden boy the iPhone. However I guess if they feel the Palm Pre is good enough that people will ditch O2 then I guess it would be worth it.
I’m still betting that it will be Vodafone that wins the contract.

O’Reilly has released a 56min long video on developing applications for webOS.
The following quick list of questions and answers has also been produced:
- They would not comment on the release date for the SDK or the Pre.
- They expect to see a fair amount of games on the platform. Right now, web-based games will be most suitable; other games (that need deeper access to the hardware) will come later.
- When asked if "connected" apps will run when no connection is available, they should. Apps are designed with storage functions so even web apps will have storage functions and be able to cache and load data, rather than just displaying a blank page.
- Headless apps are not limited other than the fact that they have no associated card. They operate in the dashboard panel, and technically can be as functional as a card app.
- The app catalog was mostly under wraps, but will be the primary way to get apps at launch.
- The ability to build apps will not be operating-system specific. The tools in the Mojo SDK will be supported on Mac, Linux and Windows.
- Performance is of primary concern, and once the device has been released, performance should be just as good as the pre-release demos from CES and the MWC.
- They are not commenting on how fullscreen will be implemented in 3rd party apps (currently the pic viewer and video player will support this feature), but they stated it was important, and will be looked into. They noted that window sizing will be handled at the system level.

Chris Davies of PalmPrecommunity.com has posted a great 26 minute long video of the palm pre at MWC 2009

Ok well we know most of the Palm Pre’s specification anyway but print just updated their site with the Palm Pre’s specs and it does include some nice bits of information.
The 2 main features to note is the inclusion of MMS and the ability to use the phone as a modem via Bluetooth or USB tethering.
USB tethering is quite important as it pisses me right off when I am travelling and want to connect to the net via my phone and I am unable to do so!
PreCentral also pointed out the following about the storage:
7.4GB will actually be available from the 8GB included, possibly implying the size of the OS is somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 megs or so (though it’s still unclear what the relationship between the 8GB of storage and RAM will be, and whether or not the Pre will use Program Memory RAM/Storage ROM/Mass Storage like Windows Mobile or have a simpler RAM/Storage setup like other phones).

To be honest we have nearly no idea when the Palm Pre will be launched, officially it is set to be released in the first half of 2009. However that has not stopped everyone coming up with theories on exactly when it will be released.
The main rumour is February 15th though it seems unlikely however there have been several sources backing up this date, so you never know!
Palmpreschool.com believes we will see the pre on the shelves March 1st. The reasoning behind this is a little in the world of conspiracy theories.
Basically they state:
Viewing the time on the pre in each of Palm’s screen shots will clue you in. Every image shows a time of 3:01. I have to admit a very discreet level of communication. But not official just incase things get held up.
Personally I doubt that will be the case but if they are correct then this will be great as we have less than a month away until release date. I do however have a strong suspicion that us Brits will not have the same release date as the yanks as they Palm is based on 3G EVDO Rev A which is the network used in the USA. A GSM one will be released but you know there will be a gap in release dates!
