Redferret.net has made an interesting post regarding the and its ability to handle multiple live windows running on screen for each program running in the background.

Redferret contacted T1, the process manufacturer, asking them about the Palms Processor and received some quite impressive info:

The ARM Cortex A8–based OMAP 3 processor (OMAP3430) in the Pre is 3 times faster than the ARM11 core. Which translates into:

  • Boot time in as little as 4 seconds
  • Up to 4x graphical performance
  • Up to 2x camera performance improvements
  • Up to 4x video performance
  • The chip in the Pre supports up to a 12 megapixel camera (!) as well as offering support for 720p HD video.
  • omap3430

The onl other 2 devices that I can find (and know of) that use Cortex A8 core are the Pandora (handheld game console) and the  Archos 5.

In comparison the devices using the old ARM11 core which is 3x slower are:

ARM1136J(F)-S Core: Texas Instruments OMAP2420 which is used for Nokia E90, Nokia N93, Nokia N95, Nokia N82

Qualcomm MSM7200 (with integrated ARM926EJ-S Coprocessor@274MHz, used in Eten Glofiish, HTC TyTN II, HTC Nike)

For the ARM1176JZ(F)-S Core: Apple iPhone, Apple iPod touch, Conexant CX2427X, Motorola RIZR Z8, Motorola RIZR Z10

So in theory the should be significantly faster than the likes of the iPhone or any of the Nokias. Obviously the software will also play a significant role in performance.

The one concern is how does this powerful process effect batter life?

Palmpreblog.com (2) have made 2 posts indicating that Vodofone will the the exclusive carrier of the in the UK and EU.

In the original post they have a screen shot from the WebOS SDK (Software Development Kit) which features a line of code stating “UseVodaphoneVoicemail

In the 2nd post they claim to be almost 100% sure Vodafone will be carrying the in the UK. They spent several days harassing Vodafone about the they finally got through to someone who acknowledged the carriers plans to, well, carry the device. They received the following email:

    Hi Ryan,

With regrets, I can not currently share any information regarding the handset; we are still in early negotiation with Palm, but nothing is solid. I can double check next week but as of this point in time that is all I know.

Also administrator on the Vodafone UK forum also hinted at the possibility of the device coming to the network:

    Hey thatfenderstratguy,

That phone does look awesome, we were taking a look at this in the office the other day a few of us have our eye on it, I would keep your eyes peeled on the coming soon section here at our online shop.

    Thanks

No surprise there really I don’t think Palm would want to be with O2 nor would O2 want to take the as it would be in direct competition with O2’s golden boy the iPhone.

T-Mobile have also spent a lot of money pushing the G2 and they are also one of the original members of the open handset alliance (Vodafone joined later) so it makes sense for them to stick with Android.

3 have the smallest number of customers out of the main networks so it would not make sense for Palm to give them an exclusive contract.

Granted Vodafone have the BlackBerry Storm, but it has been a bit of a flop certainly compared to the iPhone and they don’t have the investment in Android like T-Mobile does.
